What are the Odds?

What are the odds? If you are a football fan, or happen to be in Las Vegas, not surprisingly, you probably heard this expression a lot over the weekend. More surprisingly, I hear this expression often when talking to clients about the need to do a proper Will & Estate plan. More specifically, clients say they aren’t worried about preparing or updating an out-of-date Will or preparing or updating their Powers of Attorney because “what are the odds of something happening to me in the near future?”. Even when the odds are extremely low, “it” can and does happen.
Back to my football analogy…here’s how some of the “odds” played out.
The odds of Joe Flacco winning the MVP were 11/4 –happened
The odds of Anquan Boldin scoring the first touchdown were 8 /1 — happened
The odds of ‘green’ Gatorade being dumped on the winning coach were 10/1 — did not happen
There were even odds given as to whether or not Jay-Z would join Beyonce on stage for her halftime show — did not happen
My conclusion is that anything can happen despite the odds. The best advice I can give is don’t take chances with your estate plan. Ensure you Will and Powers of Attorney are up-to-date and continue to reflect your wishes. Improve your odds by using an expert and plan for unforeseen circumstances
